But, we live and learn (apparently!).

Unfortunately, most newbie small businesses, are like I used to be – they get social media wrong.

New webmasters and business owners hear the same, tired, old phrase: “You must have a social media presence!”

This is very true – in this day and age you must!

But what that social media presence entails isn’t always spelled out correctly…

But, as well as the awesome video from Jay above, I also thought I’d use this final section of the article to highlight a few of my own personal social media tips and tricks. Don’t get me wrong – Jay is the master when it comes to online marketing webinars, but I thought I’d mention a few pointers I find important…

This is where I went VERY wrong during the my first few months of social media marketing –  I didn’t really know how the whole gig worked. It’s important that you take the time to learn how social media marketing works for your chosen niche or business.

At the end of the day there is a mass of great information online for free (like the video tutorial above), you don’t have to pay through the nose to get an education in it.

When starting out it makes sense to consume as much content and free resources as you can – get a foothold in the subject before jumping in with both feet!



There’s no point being a presence on social media if you are not prepared to take the rough with the smooth. If people say certain aspects of your product/service/brand are shit then find out WHY they think this way!

Remember – social media sites can be used as an extension of your customer service.

In my experience, when you start to open your ears to your audience, you open the door to other opportunities as well.



There are some fantastic automated services out there for social media…but there are also some crappy spam-ridden tools as well! Don’t get overwhelmed with your social media feeds – try automating (the correct way!).

Most (if not all) of the decent automation apps have a free service on hand so you can get going without hurting your wallet pocket.

Try to provide valuable and relevant information to your followers – don’t just blast their feed with promotional shit and CTA’s (use automation to create a gentle mix of the two).



There are several ‘big players’ in the social media world and I know how tempting it can be to sign up with every one and just go for it…but that’s what we like to call ‘spreading yourself too thin’.

Start with a couple of social platforms, say Facebook and Twitter, and master them before moving on to the next one.

Expand your social reach as your online business grows and more effort can be allocated to additional social platforms.



Over the past couple of years I’ve noticed a HUGE increase in the importance of how your posts look – social media is getting more and more visual by the day!

Keep in mind that most users are scrolling past an incredible amount of content – YOUR content must REALLY stand out in order to gain their attention.

You need to make sure that the visual side of your posts are compelling enough to get people interested in your niche to click on them – think ‘aesthetically pleasing’.
