Social networking has been taking place in a basic format since we as humans were able to communicate. Social media sites are just a broader and dynamic way to converse with friends, family and acquaintances.

Today we thought we’d cover a ( revised ) publication we got hold of a fortnight ago that covers word of mouth marketing tips through social media.

Many ‘old school’ companies still fail to grasp the importance of social media and how powerful an ally it can be.

You constantly hear about workplaces blocking their employees from logging into social accounts at work. This means that these businesses are in turn blocking off an avenue for engaging with customers and prospects as required.

Other companies opt to streamline their social efforts behind a brick wall of overpaid social media teams when regular employees could well do a better job.

This book examines word of mouth marketing and explains how businesses can improve their services and attract new customers through social media. The advice is platform-neutral so it will work on any chosen social networking route.

The Good & The Bad

The Pros:

  • The guide is a quick and easy read that offers numerous examples
  • Offers a great section for novices to social media marketing
  • Provides information on crisis planning of problems through social media
  • Provides very clear insights into how word of mouth marketing can be utilized for to improve sales
  • Covers the links between social media and better customer service
  • Guide is put together in easy to follow layman’s terms
  • Offers social networking advice on building trusting relationships with your consumers ( as opposed to being ‘on the sell’ all the time! )

The Cons:

  • Some readers have complained that not all of the social networks displayed on the front cover are covered in the same depth

Who is This Book For?

This is an amazingly insightful book aimed at individuals/businesses who want to improve their social media marketing skills.

If you are looking to take your business online and build up a social presence this is the perfect guide for you!

Our Final Opinion on Likeable Social Media

This was a pretty impressive social media marketing guide for beginners. Most social media guides end up becoming obsolete a few months after publication. This is usually down to the fact that the social world is an ever-changing landscape.

Most platforms are constantly bombarded with new regulations, new offerings, and altered procedural steps. The author, Dave Kerpen, has managed to sidestep this with style.

Kerpen manages to provide you with a sincere mindset that will remain valid under any change in social circumstance.

He highlights the fact that most companies that choose to branch out online end up sounding like an insurance salesperson. He also highlights the fact that these same companies insist on talking instead of listening!

All this leads us to the main point Kerpen is trying to get across to newbies – our purpose online is to listen and evaluate not jump into ‘sell mode’.

Kerpen doesn’t just throw these techniques at you blindly – he manages to document his assertions by referring to companies who are implementing his recommendations.

I was surprised to see that big players like The Gap and Cisco had taken on his social marketing teachings and were succeeding through them!

We highly recommend this social marketing guide – no matter your skills or experience level with social media.

  1. Hey, I could actually do with a book like this. I am struggling to get to grips with social media. I hate to admit it, but I am. So it could be really good to have a guide like this to help me get to grips with it.

What is your own favourite social network?

    1. Hi there Marcus,
My favorite social network ( at the moment ) has to be Google+ – it’s communities are awesome if you use them in the correct manner. Check the book out – it could be exactly what you’re looking for…

  2. I will give this social marketing guide a try. What social media tools can you recommend that are user friendly and can be used even if its a free version. I’d like to promote my site in social media networks as well to be able to help more people through the articles I write.

    1. Hi Keye,
The social tool I use at the moment more than any other is Tweet Jukebox. It’s totally free and it works on an automated process ( it only works with Twitter though! ).

  3. Great article! I especially like how you’ve spelled out the Pros and Cons so clearly… This topic has been on my mind since starting my own website, and I think I can use plenty of the information here to make it better… Especially considering that big companies use these tips too… thanks for the help Chris!

    1. No problem Jordan – pleased you enjoyed the article enough to leave a comment. Good luck with your social media marketing 🙂

  4. Hello, Chris. I enjoyed my visit to your site and reading about passive residual ideas. I am very interested in the information given about social media and the reviews done on Wealthy Affiliate University – a fantastic University for getting the training required to start an online business.
    Take care, Chris.

    1. Hi Prince,
I see you are a new member to the Wealthy Affiliate community ( by the sound of things ). Well knuckle down and get their tutorials done – success is only around the corner 🙂

  5. Thanks for sharing this review.

I personally could use a little help with some of my social media stuff.

I’m pretty good with twitter and facebook but I lack the experience with Google + and Pinterest.

You’ve mentioned that this book is great because you think it will still be relevant as the social media landscape changes. Thats huge in my opinion because of how fast it all changes.

Does this book offer help with Google+ and Pinterest?

    1. Hi Robert, yes this book does a good job of covering all the ‘main’ social platforms out there ( including G+ and Pinterest! )

  6. Hi!

This sounds like an interesting book.

I am planning on checking it out.

You are so right about companies dropping the ball on this part of their marketing programs. Seems to me it is a no-brainer to take advantage of any and all opportunities to connect with your customers.

I rely on social marketing daily and would be lost without it.

    Thanks for the great review.

Any chance of seeing some articles on how you use social media?

    Keep the great articles coming.

    1. Hi Shawn!
We have released numerous articles on using various social media platforms on this site. If you look to the right sidebar under categories you will find the social media section 🙂

  7. Hi Chris, I think social platforms continue to be and are getting more and more important about spreading the word when it comes to business, online or off. Any information that can help any individual or business improve their skills in the social platforms has got to be worth investing in.

It is great to find a good review of a book or product that can help the buying decision for anyone, and you have explained this book well, the fact that it covers the main social platforms is well worth the investment.

Google+ is one that I need to improve on, and I will look at this book to help me, thanks.

    1. Hi Robert,
Google plus is an absolutely awesome social platform you need to get into – of course they are owned by Google ( the ranking factor will always come into play there! ). If you get the book don’t forget to come back and leave your personal views on it here – we would love to hear them 🙂

  8. Hello, Chris

Using social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and G+ always frustrated me when it came to promoting my online busines because I lacked the proper understanding.

This social media marketing guide for beginners is just what I’ve been search for to help expand my online empire 😉

    Thanks very much. Neil

  9. Hello,

I think this book seems pretty good based on your review. Probably something that I would consider buying and reading.

Would you say that this book is good for a beginner marketer or more for the advanced marketer? I’m personally a beginner and if this book is advanced then some of the info might be a little over my head.

    1. Hi Robert,
The book is aimed at anyone who wants to build a social presence for their brand or business – novice through to seasoned marketer. Hope this clears things up for you 🙂

  10. This is such a professional site and i’m totally impressed. There’s a plethora of useful information. I haven’t taken the time to really evaluate it for content but I’m going to bookmark it to make it easier to return.

However, I was not at all impressed with some of the language. It was disrespectful and not at all professional and I was offended. Just my two cents.

    1. Bit confused here Cheryl – are you real or are you some sort of troll?
You say you haven’t taken the time to read the content here then you say you were not impressed by some of the language I use? How would you know what language I use if you haven’t read the content here?
I don’t really know the reason you left this comment.
I write as a REAL human being – sometimes I swear, sometimes I don’t! It’s never bothered any of my readers before and it’s one of the reasons this site gets so many returning visitors.
If you have taken offense please feel free to NOT visit my site again and stick to something a little safer like Pinterest. I hear they have nice knitting section 🙂

  11. Awesome read Chris!
I’m actually struggling with all my social media channels and have been trying to sustain for many months now. Unfortunately, the growth is extremely slow except for Twitter and Linked and I’ve been looking for ways on how to improve the other channels like Facebook and Google+. After reading your review, I think I’ll definitely need to get one of these Likable Social Media Marketing ebook. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!

    1. Great stuff Riaz – nice to hear that this guide is what you are looking for. Don’t forget to return here and give your ‘two cents’ on the information it contains. It’ll help our other readers decide if it is a good choice for them or not!

  12. This book seems very interesting and thanks for the post. I would love learning more about how marketing works with social media. I am fairly new online and am trying to get my website traffic up among other things. Looks like an excellent read. Thanks for the post and review.

    1. Hi Jason,
Well if you’re struggling to get you blog traffic numbers up, social media is a pretty effective option! You’ll always find social members that have the same interests as you – follow them and spread your word 🙂

  13. Hi Chris, thanks for sharing. This sounds like a great book that will benefit any business. I especially like that you said the information shared in it is solid and will still apply no matter what changes there are to social media and I really feel this is so important with the every changing online environment.

    1. No problems Lynne – glad you found the review worthwhile 🙂
Yes, the techniques covered in the book will definitely work no matter how the social landscape develops or changes – the author’s been extremely clever in this way!

  14. Hi Chris

Social marketing is incredibly important indeed! Which would you say is the best platform for social marketing?

I always get a bit sceptical when looking at books that are about Internet marketing and social media marketing etc because it is a constantly changing platform and is nearly outdated by the time that it is in print. I could be wrong though! 🙂

    1. Hi Stacey,
Well, I’ve had the most success through Twitter so I suppose I’d have to go along with that as my favorite. Everyone is different though so it’s hard to nail down what will fit for others! It’s best to open an account with each and see how it goes – see which one fits your niche the best 🙂

  15. When reading the con section to the book, I honestly thought it reminded me of all the other material out there like it. They talk about facebook a little bit, twitter a bit and that’s usually it… with some obvious tactics that people are told every day but still never learn to do it properly. Does this book fix that problem?

Seems like an interesting one to pick up, thanks for covering it!

    Matt TheDopestMatrix

    1. Hi Matt,
Yeah it really manages to stand out from the crowd with regards to new and ‘effective’ methods ( for once! ). Most of the stuff in there was new to me and extremely interesting.

  16. Hey there, this sounds like the perfect book for me right now. I’m struggling to get the sort of feedback I’m looking for on Google+. I’ll like the way they put emphasis on listening to clients as apposed to selling to them. Well done on a comprehensive article. I’ll be following the link to buy this book. Thank you.

  17. Hi Chris,
I am not quite sure that do you guys still even remembered what is ‘friendster’? I think that is really very old school there. More than a decade ago I think? I used to spend a lot of time with friendster during that time, and only than it came out with facebook.
I personally do not use facebook a lot, but after sticking with WA, I’m becoming a G+ user more often than facebook.

  18. I have never been much into social media, apart from a bit of Facebook here and there to keep up with your family.

However I am definitely going to have to get into it more for business purposes if I want to do well online.

Good review and I am sure you must be doing well with this website.

  19. Wow Chris, you have absolutely brought to the fore the importance of social media through your review of this book. But if Sisco and co are beginners, then I guess I haven’t started yet. This book is a must read. Is there a soft copy version ( I mean a pdf) I could purchase? Or is it on kindle?

    1. Hi Emmanuel,
I believe there was a softback version available on Amazon at the time of writing this review. Use one of the links below and have a quick check ( sometimes there’s even cheap ‘used’ versions that are second hand! )

  20. Hi Chris,

Where I work, they block employees from using social media sites became they say it has a potential for bringing viruses into their computer system. I totally disagree and feel, as you mentioned that it reduces their potential for greater exposure.

I have bookmarked the book on Amazon as I am myself starting an online business. I have never fully understood how to implement and get the best out of social media networking.

Thank you for this helpful information.

    1. Great to hear Lis,
There are plenty of articles on social media here ( on this site! ) so feel free to have a look around and find out a bit more 🙂

  21. I read your article about Social Media guide for beginners. What else can I say other than being excellent. In this day and age, Social Media is very important and very powerful for improving our web presence and branding strategies. I would like to say that without using proper social media strategies your business won’t exist.

  22. Thanks for the awesome review on social media marketing. We all need to learn the right way to promote with and get social love. seems like the book to get it done. I am already reading two books but will bookmark this site to come back and get this one next. best regards robert

  23. Looks like a great product to learn how to do social media and the price tag is also not that high. Some of these courses can even go higher that $100.

Social media also goes hand in hand with ranking on google and other search engines. Some people make a full time income just by focusing on social media alone.

  24. Thank you for your helpful article. Social commerce is not going to go away. It is only going to get stronger and become more of a way of life. Like you said, we have been asking our friends for years for feedback on what’s the best restaurant in town, where do you buy your shoes, etc. Your review of this book appears to be helpful on many levels, and this book should withstand the changing times.

    1. Cool stuff David – great to hear that you’ve taken an interest in the book! Don’t forget to come back and leave your own views on it if you decide to give it a go! 🙂

  25. Social media networking has taking a central stage as far as online businesses are concerned. Have been struggling to understand how the social media work when it comes to promoting ones business. In this wise, i think i need this social marketing guide to boost my understanding and knowledge of the workings of social media network.
Thanks for this helpful review. All the best, God bless you.

  26. Great article $16 bucks for that book is not bad at all. I actually been looking to improve my social media skills without adding friends and family to my business page and its kind tough. What I like about the book that you mentioned is that it is platform neutral, my first thought was..well what if they forget a social platform that I use but I see that it can be applied with all of them.

  27. Hi Chris,

I have a lot to learn about social media admittedly so this could prove very useful. Personally I like Google+ as it just fits well with me compared with FB and twitter. It is easy to build your network and and I like the way it is organised.

So is this book more designed for business owners and local social media or is it really useful for affiliates as well? Thanks for sharing

  28. Thanks for the review of this book. From the gist of your review, it sounds like the author has designed The Social Media Marketing Guide For Beginners to be an evergreen product.

I mean by this that many of the points in the book are strategic in nature, as opposed to specific
“how-to” for each of the social platforms. This is useful for the beginner as a resource or a more advanced user even I think…

I am always interested in good reference books and this one seems like a winner to me. i will definitely consider adding it to my library. Cheers!

  29. Hi Chris. I am not much of a fan of any of the social media sites. But, I am going to have to learn some of them and how they work, rules regulations etc.

This book sounds like it contains the type of information I need to move my online business forward.

Thanks for finding it and writing this review.

  30. Hi Chris. I am not much of a fan of any of the social media sites. But, I am going to have to learn some of them and how they work, rules regulations etc.

This book sounds like it contains the type of information I need to move my online business forward.

Thanks for finding it and writing this review.

  31. Social media hasn’t been my favorite means of marketing, but I am starting to use it more lately.

The main problem with Social Media is that you can get sucked into it so quickly and before you know it an hour has passed and you are still reading stuff on Facebook.

This book looks like a great idea, and I am sure you are going to sell a lot of them.

  32. Hi Chris,
I really enjoyed reading your review. I think this book might be just what I need to take my busiess to the next level. I am not that good at social media since I always thought it was doing a better job at distracting rather than helping. Nevertheless it could be a great promotional tool if you know how to use it.
    Thanks fo the recommendation.

  33. Thanks for the thorough review!

As a young person who feels pretty savvy to social media, do you truly feel like this guide–or ANY guide for that matter–is necessary? (Disclaimer: I have not yet incorporated social media into my own website!)

I’ve thought about looking into books like this but I just can’t get past the (possibly overconfident) view that I can just figure it out myself. This thought is often reinforced when I read any information about the book. Does the book have information that you think the average savvy social media user might not know already?

Also, does the book discuss Snapchat? I’m fascinated by the power of Snapchat to really engage with an audience in a way that feels really genuine.

    1. It all depends where you feel you are Amy – social media marketing is a very powerful beast but only if you are approaching it the right way. Do you feel you know enough to take it on in the right manner?
