Basic SEO Tips For Beginners


To be honest with you, I had no idea what Latent Semantic Indexing Keywords were until I ended up in a Google+ marketing hangout, about 18 months ago.

It was one of those conversation topics that made you think “crap, I really should about know this…but I don’t!”

Turns out I DID know about this form of keywords…but I didn’t know they were referred to as Latent Semantic Indexing Keywords (LSI).

So what are they and how can they DRASTICALLY improve your content’s rankings?

Latent Semantic Indexing Keywords

Do you recognise the image above? You usually find it at the bottom of the first page of Google’s results, right?

They are basically synonyms and search terms which are closely related to the term you used to search in Google.

Now these babies are powerful – VERY powerful!

Simply plug your main article keyword into Google and make a list of all the Latent Semantic Indexing Keywords it returns.

Try your best to use ALL of these in your article, along with your main keyword of course.

Don’t go mad – use each one once only!

These keywords REALLY help Google to understand what your page is all about…and they will reward you for this SEO direction!


This is a really simple tip but you’d be surprised at how many newbie webmasters ignore it – make sure you are using unique titles in EVERY post/article you publish to your website.

Google has actually gone out of it’s way to let webmasters know that lazy page titles on websites will incur a ranking penalty – they refer to it as ‘Boilerplate’ titles.

This means duplicate titles or titles that are extremely similar to other article titles on your site (long titles that only have one different word in them!).

At the end of the day it’s not really that hard is it? Simply create a unique title around the main keyword you are using for your article (you can even make use of a keyword tool to dig out a unique title!).


I run 5 main websites these days – I’ve finally managed to cut things down to this number!

What one thing do all these sites have in common?

A Privacy Policy page.


These pages give a strong indication to Google that you are not a dodgy old affiliate site. Internet users are also used to landing on ‘real’ professional websites that have a Privacy Policy page…even if they never read it (and most of them don’t!).


For some reason, a large majority of newbie webmasters have a lazy attitude to creating articles…and this shows in the length of each piece of work they publish.

I often get requests to check out people’s blogs/websites and give my honest opinion. Most of the time I am less than impressed by the length of each article.

Apparently, you need at least 300 words on a webpage for it to rank within Google’s results system…but that REALLY doesn’t mean you need to stop there!

There is a definite correlation between long content and higher rankings – 1000 words tends to be the first ‘sweet spot’ to target.

Please don’t spend all your time searching for killer keywords if you are expecting your article to rank for 500 words – it won’t!


I used to be really guilty of putting content out there then leaving it behind me – the more articles the better right? Why bother with old stuff when you can move right onto the next article?

Well, Google likes websites that take good care of the content they publish – so go back over old articles and see if you can improve them (add a paragraph here and there).

Freshen up old content

It also makes good sense to let people know you have updated old articles by telling them in a form of a ‘notice’ at the top of your article.

People tend to shy away from older content and blog posts that were published years ago – let them know the article has been updated and let them see the date it was updated.

When you have over 50 articles on your website, internal linking becomes a piece of cake…so why do so many bloggers opt to ignore this SEO concept?

To give your internal links more SEO juice, link one of your high ranking website pages to your new article!

Seriously guys – it takes no more than a minute to link to a related page on your site (there is NO excuse!).


If I land on an article that is nothing more than a sea of text…I don’t stay there very long!

Studies have shown that people pretty much ‘switch off’ when confronted with a page of dull text – people don’t come online to read a book – they are part of the ‘scanning’ generation!


Images are a pretty awesome way of splitting up your sea of text…and therefore they help keep people on the page for longer (resulting in Google rewarding your page with higher rankings!).

These days, Google is paying more and more attention to user experience signals. You need to try EVERYTHING in your power to keep people on your page as long as possible.


A lot of marketers still think that keyword density plays a BIG part in how well your content ranks – I am not one of these people!

Most of the time I only use my keyword once in the content of my articles, as well as including it in the article’s title of course.

I ALWAYS make sure I use my keyword in the first 100 words of my article – it doesn’t give my work a huge SEO boost but it certainly helps overall.


We’re all guilty of it from time to time – we start writing a post and then get bored of it halfway through…and end up with rather flat and skinny 600 word articles!


Now, by themselves, these articles are obviously pretty sh#t!

They don’t really help your website one bit.

So, if you have a bunch of mediocre articles that aren’t driving traffic, combine them into a single mega-guide article!

That one article will actually rank better and the information contained within it will attract a lot more social shares.


Infographics are everywhere on social media these days – this means that people like sharing posts that display this type of image.

Social signals can been very powerful when it comes to ranking website content, so the more shares your work gets, the better!

A word of warning though – don’t just post an infographic and leave it at that!


Well Google cannot read images (other than the alt tags related to them) so it will have no real idea what your infographic article is about.

Always include about 400 to 500 words below the infographic display to let Google know what it’s actually about!
