Setting up The Store

Setting up your store is the easy part. There are a plethora of ecommerce solutions, apps, and websites that can help you set up shop relatively quickly.

Shopify is one of the more popular ones, but other ones include Squarespace, Bigcartel, and Woocommerce.

Powerful analytical tools that give you the ability to analyze your sales trends normally come with many of these platforms so that you can get a calculated look at what designs may sell better than others.

Designing Your T-Shirts

Similar to setting up your website, there are a number of solutions to getting your t-shirt designs done using online resources.

Sites such as Customink, Uberprints and even Vistaprint are great examples of sites that give you the option to design your own t-shirts using their online resources.

Some sites even allow free design if you design and print your t-shirts within the same company.

Another option would be to hire a designer to create your t-shirt. This maybe a little more costly, however working with a designer will help to differentiate your brand and your products in a way that resonates with your audience.

Customizing always works best if done the correct way. If you have a knack for designing, or have a background in graphic arts, you can design your own t-shirts using a picture editor like Photoshop.

Fulfilling Orders

We all know that one of the risks you take in any retail business is ordering excess inventory. For this reason, drop shipping has become one of the popular methods of online entrepreneurs to make money due to the nature of the business model.

You can also drop ship your t-shirts designs using various websites and many of these sites provide one stop services including designing printing, and drop shipping your shirts.

These added conveniences not only limit your risk but also increase the convenience level of getting started in a truly turnkey business with little to no money down.

What to Focus on

One of the most important aspects of starting your online t-shirt business includes the branding or the messaging you choose and the niche you choose to target.

In a pool of online competitors, standing out and reaching a specific group of people will help to lead you to success quicker than just putting up a t-shirt that is general, very broad and vague.

A very trendy idea would be to create slogan t-shirts that target a very specific audience for example, exercise enthusiasts, sports fans or maybe certain demographics of people like moms, single people or married couples.

Branding and messaging that reaches the emotions of people or funny messages that resonate with a specific group of people or audience will help to differentiate you from the crowd merchants pushing their next idea.

Be sure to choose good quality t-shirts and printing to ensure the final product is one of the best on the market.

There are mainly 3 options to choose from for printing your designs, but the most cost effective for someone just starting out would be screen printing.

You can print simple designs and most colors at an affordable rate so that you can remain competitive yet cost effective.

  1. Another great website to sell t-shirts is Payspree because their commission rate is very high. You can sell t-shirts in almost any niche because if people are passionate about the niche, then they are more likely to buy shirts from your website.

What is the commission rate of Customink, Uberprints and Vistaprint?

    1. I haven’t heard of Payspree – will have to check that one out! The links to each website are included in the article, check them out for the commission rates! 🙂

  2. Just wondering. Compared to retails with e-commerce, if retailers perform better in sales than e-commerce, do you think these shirts will be sold on retail?

In terms of selecting the words which should be put in, in other words statement, I guess understanding the niche is important.

An open minded group would not be bothered with funny statements that some people might take it offensive. Though there’s a downside of reputation risk.

Anyways, thanks for sharing the tips, in particular the specific online platforms such as Shopify.

  3. Hi,
Excellent website. You have increased my knowledge on setting my online business.

The concept of selling items is promising and your ideas of branding also are so educational.

The idea of setting up a store is also so interesting.

May I ask please what is Shopify? Can you please give me a short brief about it?

    Thank You,

    1. Eh I’m doing your job for you here am I? 🙂

It’s best I use the Wikipedia explanation for you – “Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, that develops computer software for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems”.

To be honest it’s worth you going directly to their site and having a quick look around if you’re interested, they have excellent options there and they are very popular!

      Good luck!

  4. Awesome guide Chris! I really like the step by step layout and that you recommend some design sites as well, had no idea they were separated from the supplier site! 😛

Will bookmark the page for the future, since one of my ideas has been to eventually add some clothing to further my brand! Thanks for the value man! 🙂

  5. Hi Chris,
Of course with the continued explosion of the Internet it makes quite possible the very idea behind the basis of your article – selling tee-shirts online and for profit.

Unfortunately people who don’t use your suggestions stated in this article end up producing inferior products. I have purchased tee-shirts in the past, stuff that I bought for about $5 that represented the amount that I paid for them – basic junk!

Designing a shirt made up of quality material, not inferior junk is a starting point. Finding the proper niche is also important and that would take a bit of research done on that person’s part.

Shipping and fulfilling orders done through some of the sites that you mentioned are also crucial. Fulfilling those orders in a timely fashion would also be an absolute must! I don’t want to receive a tee-shirt as a customer 8 weeks after I originally ordered it. That would represent disorganization on that business owner’s part.

Money can be made in this type of business venture. It’s just that the person pursuing this venture better have his/her act together, seriously implementing all of the steps that you mentioned in order to make it a success.

    1. Hello once again Jeff – great to have you back here!

I think that finding the proper niche or subject for your t shirt is a very important one at the end of the day. Judging fashions and what is going to take off is a lot harder than it sounds.

Also, I thought you were bang on the money about the business side of the supply line – completing orders in a timely fashion will give you the edge over many of your competitors!

Like any business it’s all going to be about the amount of effort and dedication you put into it – the harder workers will succeed!

Great to speak with you once again!
