These days it makes good sense to have some sort of web content management strategy in place when building out a blog or website.

Some people can’t write very well, other people can write pretty well – the problem is there is a mountain of good content already online. I find bad web content usually comes from a severe lack of confidence in the author’s own writing skills.

So what is the answer?

Well, you need two things in place for ANY website to ‘make it’ in this day and age:

  1. You need visitors to your site
  2. You need engaging and worthwhile content

The funny thing is that visitors will arrive at your site IF you have engaging and worthwhile content on it!

About a year ago I borrowed a book off a colleague of mine that teaches newcomers how to write great website content – I still haven’t given it back…

Letting Go of the Words by Janice (Ginny) Redish is a superb look into the principles on clear writing for the modern day internet.

I was so impressed by it I decided to write a review for this site that highlights my experiences with it so far. The Cons:

  • ​Minor sections cover some design and code elements which might not appeal to all readers
  • A lot to learn in the book which may lead to information overload for some ( I recommend re-reading parts whenever possible )

Who is This Book For?

Regardless of what type of writing you do, you will find great value in this book. If you are struggling with bounce rates and keeping your site visitors engaged then this guide should be top of your Christmas list.

This is the go-to publication for ANY webmaster who wants to improve the quality of his/her work.

Our Final Opinion on Letting Go of The Words

Forget page ridden SEO – sometimes the most effective way to optimize your website is through impressive content. I love the way you can apply this book to just about any type of writing and make it work!

After reading both editions I realized the second edition was far superior and up to date with modern day internet techniques. It had a host of new examples and more emphasis on usability testing.

  1. This sounds like a great book, particularly for those of us wanting to create online businesses and relying on building our audiences through writing great content. The qualities of great written content are universal in my opinion, but there definitely are additional requirements when it’s web based writing. I’ll definitely be researching this book.

  2. I think I might have just found what I need. I am just getting started in affiliate marketing, and am having trouble writing good quality content day after day. If this book really does what you say it does, I will be purchasing one. I know I can be successful, but only if people are interested in my writing, so I hope this helps me. Cheers.

  4. I love your review! I am tempted to purchase this book myself! I agree completely with you where you said that poor content may come from a lack of confidence. Does this book have any tips on overcoming the lack of confidence? I’m sure many people have this problem and that most “writers block” stem from a lack of confidence!

  5. The price of the book is not so bad in comparison to the value that this book will bring us. Its best for all the people who are currently working on “getting noticed” online and wants to really expand their visitor’s rate.
    When the book was published? Its important for it to be up to date, because you know – the internet changes all the time.

  6. This looks like a great book to get. I always thought you could either write or not. Kind of like being an artist.

    Well, I have since learned that practice makes perfect. The more you write, the better you get.

    Of course it will also help to get some great training, as you suggest in the form of this book on clear writing.
