Is UserTesting a Scam?

Is UserTesting a Scam?

Did you know that there are over 1 billion websites on the world wide web today – apparently this milestone was first reached in September of 2014.

That’s a lot of digital real estate, up and running, and hopefully making money.

So that’s over a billion websites – what about apps and games?

Well, the numbers just get silly when you add these to the equation!

Developers of websites, apps and games NEED the feedback of the ordinary Joe – it’s the most important feedback a wannabe successful online business can get.

Enter companies like – places that offer to pay people for taking part in these ‘tests’.

Interested in this sort of work?

Well first off the bat – is UserTesting a scam or is it legit?

The Review

What is UserTesting?

What is UserTesting? is a usability testing website that pays it’s members to assist marketers, app, gaming and website developers – you are basically testing their products!

It has been around since 2007 and it’s owned by Darrell Benatar and Dave Garr (it’s a US company).

Digital products like apps and websites will more often than not experience a few ‘glitches’ when they are first put together. UserTesting gets it’s members to try out these digital products BEFORE they are rolled out properly to the public – find out how they behave with random users.

So, UserTesting members will try out these digital products and report their feedback, and get paid. UserTesting will then hand the feedback over to the developers.

The Tools of The Trade

Before you jump into this opportunity, you need to make sure you have the following tools:

  • A laptop or desktop computer (Mac or PC)
  • Internet connection
  • A microphone for your computer
  • A smartphone or similar handheld device (like a tablet etc)
  • A webcam for your computer

If you don’t have all of the above – don’t waste your time by signing up with UserTesting (you will be extremely limited in what work you can do…if any!).

Signing up to Work

You don’t have to pay anything to work for UserTesting – it’s completely free to sign up with if you are above the age of 18 and your country accepts PayPal payments.

The Review

There is a small test put in place for new members before they can start testing products. If you pass, they will confirm your active membership through an email alert.

There is a bit of screen recording software that UserTesting expects it’s members to download and use. Once you have this set up you are good to go!

The Money Side of Things

The shorter, easier tests pay out about $3 on average – the more difficult tests pay out about $10 on average.

Although this money sounds pretty good, members are warned that most jobs are set up on a demographics basis. This means there might not always be testing work available to you.

You are paid through the Paypal payment processor with a seven day delay (i.e. seven days after you have completed the project).

UserTesting Pros

I really like the level of payment on this site. With a lot of ‘work online’ sites you end up with a great earning idea…but an extremely low payment level. Not the case with UserTesting.

UserTesting Pros

If you are lucky enough to live in a demographic that gets a lot of work, you could do pretty well out of this site!

I also like the fact that they are setup for Paypal payments, as it shows they are serious about meeting their payment demands.

UserTesting Complaints

As with all online companies – there are a handful of complaints that have followed this earning opportunity around.

I stumbled upon a few past members who have experienced problems in getting hold of their earnings…which is a little strange considering UserTesting use Paypal!

Anyway this was over a short period in time – these payment issues did not persist (apparently!).

I also encountered a few negative reviews from members who signed up only to find there was no work on offer for them…for months. This raises the question – do they really have enough work for all of the members they’ve taken on?

Is UserTesting a Scam?

Although there are a handful of complaints online – UserTesting is definitely not a scam. I’ve encountered numerous positive experiences with them dotted all over the internet.

What about the complaints?

Well, most online companies get things wrong from time to time – call it ‘glitches’ in their journey.

At the end of the day – they get more right than they get wrong!
