I’m often asked about the technical side of Google’s ranking system because many webmasters notice their site slipping away. In this article we will be looking at simple and effective ways to improve your Google search ranking if YOU start to witness a slide…
1) Ever Heard of Internal Linking?
This is a no-brainer if you are looking to improve your Google rankings free of charge. If I spent the next hour visiting random websites I suspect at least 50% of them would have forgotten about internal linking.
Internal linking is simply linking one of your webpages to another one of your (relevant) webpages. Doing this will help that article rank for long tail SEO-related keywords.
Internal linking is a long drawn out process though – don’t expect to be on the first page of Google within the week. My tests have shown that it takes a couple of months for Google to crawl your site correctly and register your internal linking efforts.
If you have just read this and are thinking about retracing your steps with every page you have published please stop a second – this will not help!
Most techniques need to seem natural in the eyes of Google so madly linking one old page to another will not help your cause.
It’s best to start now and go on from there – every time you write a new page include the internal linking process. Don’t go back to older pages and start messing about!
2) Will Backlinks Improve Your Search Ranking?
Well yes, they will, but that doesn’t mean I agree with them though! I happen to think backlinks are dangerous things to be messing about with in this day and age.
How long do you think it’s going to be before Google or any other top search engine decides to change it’s view on backlinks?
It might never happen – but what if it does?
You’d be right in the brown stuff and there will be no return for your website!
So I stay away from back links these days and try and get other people to do it for me – natural backlinking!
This will ensure the safety of my site in the eyes of the search engines.
If you do decide to link to your site to boost positions then don’t aim them at a page that has dropped in rankings. Google ain’t no fool and it will notice that you are building up links at an unnatural pace.
3) Freshen up Your Pages
A simple way to improve your Google ranking free of charge is to keep your pages fresh. It’s easy to post, publish and then forget about a page.
Google loves to see old pages being updated with new content and images etc. It sort of looks at this updating as an attempt to create a better user experience – and boy does the ‘Big G’ like this!
Old news is exactly that – old news! How many people do you expect to stay on your site if you provide them with old news on the landing page?
By updating these pages you are giving yourself more of a chance to keep these visitors on site and getting them to share your work. This means they will be building up your back link portfolio for you naturally!
4) Webmaster Tools Click-Through Rate
Improving your click-through rate will almost certainly improve your Google search ranking. Google uses it’s webmaster tools efficiently and it knows how well your click-through rate is going.
If you have a low click-through rate and you are ranking high in Google’s search results they will take note of this and drop you downwards.
To combat this, optimize your title tag and meta description to increase your click-through rate. Try and use ‘How to’ headings and ‘Free Tips’ whenever possible. People LOVE lists so experiment with a ‘7 ways to…’ or ‘5 great tips to…’.
It’s all about catching people’s attention with your snippet in Google’s results page. There are ten results on that page and you want yours to stand out!
5) Go Social Baby!
About a year ago I was informed that social shares really could rock your rankings. Not everyone agrees with this theory but I certainly believe there is some truth to it.
My experience has led me to believe that Google uses social signals in it’s ranking algorithm.
At this point in the article most dickhead marketers would try and convince you that you should buy ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ at some site or another – I’m not going to do that!
Simply incorporate social buttons on your website and make sure they show up on every page and post – let the people do the talking! If your content is interesting enough people will share it.
Why would you want ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ from a fake, empty social account linked to your site – do you think Google won’t notice this?
The 5 techniques above will only improve your Google search ranking if you decide to go natural. Don’t be a freak and go hell for leather using each one. Even if it’s done over a process of a fortnight you will see results sooner rather than later. Good luck!
