The Dreamstime Review

What is Dreamstime?

Dreamstime is a website that concentrates on Stock Photography, and they claim to have a service that actually pays photographers to upload loyalty-free images.

They also offer a service for creators of videos and vector illustrations.

This ‘media’ is then sold by the website and they hand out a percentage of the sale to the uploaders of the work.

It was started back in 2004 and is currently owned and run by a guy named Serban Enache – the ‘company’ itself is based in America.

Sell Images at Dreamstime

Okay – so how does this baby work?

How do you sell images at Dreamstime?

First of all you have to sign up for a free contributor account, then you can start uploading your material immediately.

As a contributor, you have to comply with the rules set around your average acceptance rate. This is a system that decides how many images you are allowed to upload over a 24 hour period.

The images you submit/upload have to be at least 3MP and less than 70MP in size.

Sell Images at Dreamstime

You start off as a level one contributor – you then move up through the ranks based on the amount of downloads your material receives.

There are also rather confusing earning levels which relate to each step you take up the ladder – I’m not going to go through them all here, but you can earn anywhere between $1.02 and $17 per downloaded picture.

You also have an option of handing out your images for free…but why would you want to do this???

Well, new contributors are able to boost their popularity by offering some of their image for free…after all, free stuff ALWAYS leaves the table first!

Dreamstime Payment

If you manage to make some money through the Dreamstime system (lucky you!), you can then withdraw your money through Paypal, Skrill, Payoneer or a regular cheque (sent to your address).

It’s worth noting that you cannot withdraw any payment unless you have verified your identity by sending them a photo of your passport/ID or driver’s license.

Dreamstime Complaints

To be brutally honest with you – there really weren’t that many complaints floating about online regarding Dreamstime, they seem to have quite a steady ship!

Dreamstime Complaints

The only real complaint I came across in my research was the level of the payout threshold – apparently many members find it too high, and therefore don’t manage to get paid that often.

At the time of writing this, the minimum cashout level is set at $100 (yikes!).

Is Dreamstime legit?

Well, as you can see above – there’s only one real complaint linked to the company…so that should tell you something about how they operate!

It’s a legit worldwide service that concentrates on the talent of the photographers – if you are good at what you do…you will make money there.

Of course, there is the other side of the coin…

If you are an amateur photographer who ‘thinks’ he/she is good…you could well struggle to make the payment threshold.

You see, you are competing against talent that is professional, and therefore see a lot of downloads every month – they are much higher up the ladder than you…and they probably always will be!

I personally quite like the fact that they weed out the poorer talent – if you buy an image from them you KNOW it’s a high quality image.

If you are to make real money with Dreamstime you simply have to be at a decent professional level.

  1. I am happy to see another company that has a high payout threshold. It separates out the quality talented from the amateur wannabe’s. As a website developer, I find it important to use quality images. Using free stock images means there is a greater potential for the same image to be seen on other unrelated websites.

    1. That’s actually a pretty good way to look at it Glen – higher payout thresholds separate out the quality talented from the amateur wannabe’s. I’ve never really looked at it that way before.

  2. While the idea of making money by simply uploading pictures is appealing, I’m afraid I would fall into the category of those who ‘think’ they are good photographers. lol

I think I’ll check out some of your other online income ideas instead.

But that’s not to say I won’t at some point be a consumer at dreamstime. Thanks for the info.

  3. I have used images of dreamstime for my websites, but never considered taking pictures and earning money. Do you have any experience yourself by uploading pictures and if so, is it really that hard to earn money? I understand that as a newcomer we need to promote ourselves and hand out free material. But would it work if I offer low cost images? Do you think this strategy would work instead of competing with the ‘big boys’?

    1. I suppose that’s one way you can go mate – I think it’s a trick that’s worth trying out, at least. If it works for you – pop back here and let us know all about it!

  4. Hey man great article! I have heard of Dreamstime numerous times so I thought I’d check them out further today. It looks like they have been around forever and are for sure a legit way for any budding photographer to make some extra money or go all in and make a living of it.The $100 payment threshold is pretty standard across the internet but I can see where some would find it prohibitive although if you dedicate yourself and pump out some photographs that should be a piece of cake and then some!

    Take care,

    Chris

    1. They’re definitely legit Chris but as you point out – the payment threshold is a little on the high side. But, if you are a decent photographer, you should have no problem reaching it! 🙂

  5. Thank you so much for your really honest review of Dreamtime.

I love taking photos, and at first I really liked the sound of the Dreamtime platform, but I must admit that I was very put off by the high level of the minimum payment out, especially as the payments which you get do seem to be very much on the low side. Do you have any personal experience of dealing with Dreamtime?

I am a member at Shutterstock, and they really do appear to treat their photographers much better, with a considerably higher fee than the maximum one you state, and again they do have very high standards.

I completely agree with you that anyone who is really interested in starting any kind of Affiliate Marketing will vastly benefit by going through the training offered at Wealthy Affiluate, which will enable them to be properly set up to achieve a successful business.

Many thanks for a really informative post

    Chrissie 😊

    1. Hi Chrissie,

Well the high payout level sorts out the men from the boys – It makes sure that only the talented photographers will reach a payment level (which means their images will be top quality all of the time!).
