Search Engine Evaluator Job Description

Okay, so we all know that search engines are pretty awesome machines…but nothing’s perfect right?

Even the mighty Google hits a few bugs and errors from time to time – anything that runs on computer code is subject to a little ‘break down’ occasionally!

The search engine bots we hear so much about are great at gathering information on SEO and content, but they are not miracle workers. Some errors are far too hidden for these bots to locate.

So who looks out for these types of errors?

Back to the human race (for once!).

Yes it’s true – we still have a few roles left to play on this planet!

Search Engine Evaluator Job Description

Search engine evaluators are hired to dive down into particular search terms. By doing this they are able to ‘judge’ the relevancy of search results and the adverts that are sometimes displayed in search results.

Search engines like Google really NEED a human angle on spam and relevancy – they need to know if any dodgy or broken websites have slipped through the net.

A search engine evaluator works from home – which is a pretty cool bonus really. This job is seasonal, but you can apply as a search engine evaluator whenever slots open up.

Web Search Engine Evaluator – How To…

If you are interested in becoming a web search engine evaluator you only really need two things to get started…

  1. Decent internet connection
  2. PC (or Mac)

There are different entry requirements for different search engine companies and it’s probably best that you are a native speaker (or local to) the area you will be assigned to.

There are normally tests, or exams, put in place to see if you are up to the job in question. It’s also worth noting that only one person per household will be taken on for a position (one IP address per job).

These are work at home positions but you need to be able to work at least 12 hours a week.

Search Engine Evaluation Jobs – The Top Picks

The king of the search engines is hiring!

Only one problem though – the jobs are disappearing like hot cakes!

I’m afraid you have to get up pretty early in the morning to catch one of these employment positions, but if you manage to get your foot in the door, you could be looking at around $15 an hour (which is not bad for a work online gig!).

Google does not advertise these job as search engine evaluation positions – it calls these employees ad quality raters.

After a little bit of digging, I managed to find the requirements for this rater position…

As you can see from the snippet above – they don’t take on just any Tom, Dick or Harry (well they are Google at the end of the day – they were always going to be a BIT fussy!).

Never heard of this bunch before I started to research this article! They are based in Australia and their work usually centers on crowdsourcing, search technology, social media engagement, and language technology.

If you want to go for one of their search engine worker positions you are going to need to be able to offer up at least 5 hours a day, 5 days a week.

There are three application exams that you are going to have to get through if you want one of their evaluator positions (including a English language test and a technical skills test).

From what I gather, they pay anywhere up to $14 an hour – all payments are made through Paypal (which is a BIG bonus if you ask me!).

Below is an example of the search engine jobs they have on offer (taken from the Appen Website)…

Lionbridge, along with Leapforce, is one of Google’s main men. They are both similar companies, but we are only going to cover one of them here today!

Out of the three options we are covering here – Lionsbridge will always have the most positions on offer.

They are an Irish company (based in Ballina – a town in north County Mayo) and they have openings for independent contractors from various countries.

They pay the going rate of $14 an hour if you are from the US and European countries, unfortunately they only pay $7/hour if you are based elsewhere!
