Make Money Writing Poems Online

Are you the creative type looking to make money writing poems online? If you’ve got the talent – you really should be flaunting it right?

Several days ago a good friend of mine (who likes to dabble in the art of poetry) asked me about opportunities online for poets to make a bit of cash.

I was a little embarrassed to admit that I had no idea if poetry was a viable way to earn well online…but it certainly peaked my curiosity.

So I decided to help her out and got to work on locating as many legitimate ways to make money online writing poems as I could find.

This article covers the options that I found for her…

If you are interested in making real money online that can possibly replace or supplement your income regularly check out our #1 Recommendation HERE

Make Money Writing Poetry

#1 Arc Poetry Magazine

Arc Poetry Magazine

This popular poetry mag from Canada pays out $50 per published poem (not a huge amount…but it’s better than a slap in the face!).

They currently only take submissions from October the 15th through to May the 31st.

The only downside I could see to this option was the fact that they only allow one submission a year (that submission can contain up to three poems).

#2 Dreams & Nightmares

I kinda like this one the best as I’m a bit of a geek at heart – it centres on Science Fiction works of poetry, which I find pretty cool!

If your subject matter is based on horror, science fiction or fantasy, you are welcome to submit your work to this bunch. Up to five poems can be submitted simultaneously but they only pay $12 per accepted poem (which isn’t really going to break the bank at the end of the day!).

Here is a snippet taken from their ‘About’ page:

#3 The Poetry Foundation

The Poetry Foundation, publisher of Poetry magazine, is an independent literary organization committed to a vigorous presence for poetry in our culture. It exists to discover and celebrate the best poetry and to place it before the largest possible audience.

The internet version of this foundation started up back in 2003 and is directly linked to Poetry magazine (which has been going now for over 100 years!). It’s the oldest monthly devoted to verse in the English-speaking world.

It accepts submissions throughout the whole year and published pieces are paid at a rate of $10 a line or $300 minimum. Published prose is paid out at $150 a page.

As you can see, this is a pretty high paying gig if you can get your foot in through the door – well worth checking out HERE

#4 Rattle

Rattle

Another high-paying online poetry option for you – Rattle also accepts submissions all year round. The site does not accept work that has been previously published, in print or online.

Contributors in print receive $100/poem and a complimentary one-year subscription to the magazine. Online contributors receive $50/poem.

I had a good look around this site and it’s a pretty cool setup. They consider every piece submitted to them for the Neil Postman Award for Metaphor (this apparently pays out a $1000 prize for first position every year!).

#5 Ploughshares

This Emerson College run publication is well known and well respected…but unfortunately they charge $3 for online submissions. If you want to send/mail your work in physically you don’t have to pay a penny!

Ploughshares

They accept submissions from June 1st through January 15th, and up to 5 pages of work can be submitted at any one time.

If they accept your work you will be paid a fee of $45 and supplied with two copies of the issue you are published in. On top of this you also get a free subscription to the magazine for 12 months.

#6 New Myths

I thought I’d finish off with another site that is geared towards the geek community…because that’s what I like!

New Myths is a pretty trendy looking website that accepts poetry submissions from June 1st to July 31st and from January 1st to February 28th It’s worth noting that this site is only really interested in taking on poetry from the science fiction or fantasy genre.

New Myths

The payment isn’t really that high – $30 per piece that is accepted, but if you like this kind of thing, it could be right up your street! Find out more HERE

INTERESTING FACT ABOUT THE NEW MYTHS WEBSITE: It seems to be hosted on the old Google Sites platform – I didn’t realize that was still going to be honest with you!
